Shanghai Streets

This was the intersection in front of the hotel this morning. Not too busy at that hour. It is much busier later in the day! Note the electrical wires overhead. Some buses, such as this one, are electric. Others are diesel.

The streets are clean. In addition to this modern sweeper, there were also workers with pushcarts picking up trash. There are many bicycles, scooters and small motor bikes. They have their own lane on the right.

Someone asked about the low buildings in the picture from my hotel window. They are older apartment buildings, perhaps built in the 1920s or 1930s. They are two or three stories tall. The first floor facing the street is shops. Everything else is apartments. Here is an alley from the street into the inner apartment area.

We saw several areas in the city where housing of this vintage was being torn down and replaced with high-rise apartment buildings.
